Is anyone familiar with a metal stress relieving technique that doesn't
require heat treating?

Yes, use sonic resonant SR. Does years in a day.

There are several companies that offer vibrational stress relief.
However, these methods of stress relief are of minimal benefit at
best when compared to thermal stress relief. It is hard to impart
enough vibrational energy into the piece to match the energy level
imparted by a thermal stress relief. Also, when vibratory stress
relief is used on structures, there remains the possibility of
structural deterioration or fatigue damage in some cases. This was
discussed in a technical session at the Golden Gate Materials
Technology Conference eariler this year.

Regards.

An outfit called Bonal Technologies Inc., Southfield, Mich. has been
selling "vibratory stress relieving" equipment for well over a dozen
years. They have an 800 number.

Yes, try ball or shot peening. Even hammer peening works. Has been used
for years on welds to relieve stress.

Also, tumbling parts in a vibratory bowl with various medias will
relieve stresses, particularly in formed sheet metal parts.
