The information I've obtained so far is unclear as to the frequency
that's needed. It's been said both that frequencies in the l80's and
around 254 do this.
I'd like to know where I can get fluorescent tubes (preferable) of
12"-18" or bulbs. I'll need to know how much ozone is generated,
whether they work in standard fixtures or whether special ones are
needed. Once I have sources of the products, they should be able to
give me this information.

All major companies, Philips, OSRAM and GE manufacture ozone generating
bulbs. Theoretically speaking the frequencies that generate ozone are in
the range of 100 to 200 nm, so Mercury's 184.9nm line generates some.
Philips manufactures the OZ 4W with an output of 1mW at 184.9nm and
OSRAM manufactures the HNS 10 W/U OZ with 55 microWatt/cm^2.
GE has similar bulbs to the Philips 4W OZ. You won't be able to find
ozone generating bulbs in the shape of fluorescents easily. Better go
with the smaller types.
It should be noted that the 253.7nm Mercury line also generates some
ozone, so even though the ozone concentration around a Germicidal bulb
is not as high as in that around the 4W OZ types, you will noticably
smell it if a germicidal bulb stays on for a prolonged period of time.
You could also use the following, although WARNING! it's NOT recommended
and it's dangerous!!!
Use the quartz tube from a regular 80-400W HID mercury bulb, but INSTEAD
of connecting it in series with its appropriate inductive resistance,
connect it in series with a 30-50 KOhm regular resistance. Under those
circumstances, the quartz tube will operate in glow discharge mode, so
the visible light will be minute, but a considerable amount of
ultraviolet radiation will be generated, enough to fulfill some of your
needs. But be VERY careful, even this little UV can badly burn your eyes
and skin before you can take notice.

Eventually, _everything_ is understandable.
253.7 produces zero to some really negiligible amount of ozone, although
ozone is fairly absorbing of some wavelengths that do not produce it (up
to approx. 290-300 nm or so). Germicidal lamps come in three varieties
that I know of, corresponding to zero/mostly/nearly-enough-total blockage
of the 184.9 nm line to an extent beyond its slight absorption by pure
quartz.
I once had a germicidal lamp that produced plenty of 253.7 nm radiation
and no detectable ozone.

Don, all the Germicidals I've used produced SOME ozone. Therefore either
the glass allows the passage of the ozone mercury line, or the 253.7
produces SOME ozone. Discarding the second possibility, as per your
correction, then apparently the glass allows the passage of some of the
184.9nm line.

(1) = 50 KiloOhm resistance
(2) = Mercury Quartz arc tube.
You can get a resistance of 50KOhm from any Radio Shack or other
electronic store. If you can't find one, you can break ANOTHER mercury
HID, and scavenge one of the auxilliary resistors close to the Mercury
Quartz tube that's used to start the discharge and throw THAT Mercury
bulb away altogether. Don't remove the auxilliary resistors from the
tube you want to operate, otherwise it won't start.
I believe the auxilliary resistors to be pretty close to 30-50 KOhm, but
I haven't actually measured them. Don may know better of their exact
values.
Don't EVER touch the Quartz arc tubes with your bare hands, hot or cold.
If you touch the bulb while cold with your fingers by mistake, use some
alcohol to rinse any traces of sweat off of it.
Alternatively, you could _in practical principle_ also use in place of
(1) the ballast from a 20-40W fluorescent bulb, but this will only give
you a few hundred hours of bulb operation. WARNING! The mercury arc will
underoperate and you can get lots of UV and ozone, but the ballast will
eventually get destroyed, since the arc tube will constantly try to draw
more power than the fluorescent ballast can give, causing a possible
overheating and/or meltdown of the ballast core!
The previous warning applies here as well: Do it at your own risk and
don't blame me if something goes wrong. If you can avoid doing this
altogether and go buy yourself a regular ozone bulb, you'd be much
better off. Mercury arc tubes are NOT designed to be used as ozone
bulbs.
In fact, you'd get a reduced ozone efficiency even if you manage to make
the above operate, since fused silica (the arc tube) is not completely
transparent to the mercury ozone line.
1.Can you or Don suggest type or resistor (carbon or wirewound etc)
and resistor wattage rating for either a 100 watt or 175 watt mercury
vapor tube ?
2. Alternatively could you name some (ideally low cost) U.S. sources
to buy more efficent ozone generating bulbs .

An even better solution is to get a low voltage neon sign transformer,
say a 3500 volt, 20 ma unit and drive that quartz tube with it. These
little transformers are cheap - about $25 - and won't waste power or
make lots of heat like the resistive solution. Plus the tube will
always light.
I use just such a setup to cure UV epoxy in my glass shop. Works
great.
One little correction - this setup makes a LOT of shortwave UV. Most
folks know about the eye hazard but most don't know just how quickly
the ozone produced on the surface of objects illuminated with this
stuff will damage things. One can bleach the color out of fabric in
hours. Ditto for dye-based ink. Many plastics will turn brown within
a day from surface oxidation. this means that the tube should be
operated inside a metal enclosure that blocks the emitted light. Just
blow air through the enclosure to produce the ozone.

Guess what, last time I broke a mercury lamp it was accidentally and I
did not think to see the opportunity to measure that resistor.
But I think any resistor value from 33K to 100K should work. Don't be
disappointed when Radio Shack does not have exactly 50K - the nearest
standard value for "ordinary" resistors is 51K and the nearest one common
enough for Radio Shack to stock is 47K.
