EXPO-TECH `95

Since Expo-Tech started two years ago, almost 2,000 key decision
makers from manufacturing facilities around the Quad Cities have
attended the show! Exhibit space has sold out both years - We are
planning a bigger and better show this year. Expo-Tech '95, a one day

industrial exposition and technical conference, is sponsored by 7
Quad
City technical societies: the American Institute of Plant Engineers
(AIPE), the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air
Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), the American Society of Mechanical
Engineers (ASME), the Fluid Power Society (FPS), the Illuminating
Engineering Society (lES), the Institute of Electrical and
Electronics
Engineers (IEEE), and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers
(SME).This conference is intended for engineers, technologists,
maintenance personnel, scientists, technical managers and
supervisors,
purchasing agents, consultants, educators and students. All events
will be held at The Mark of the Quad Cities, 1201 River Drive,
Moline,
Illinois 61265.

WHEN: Tuesday, October 3, 1995
Exhibits: 12:00 Noon 7:00 p.m.
Technical Conferences: 1:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.

People who pre-register by September 22, 1995 may attend for FREE.
Registration at the door is $3.00. All technical conferences are
free
to attendees. Contact Expo-Tech '95
at fax number (309) 764-0929 for a pre-registration form.

TECHNICAL CONFERENCES:

1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Electronic Ballast Basics presented by Adam Karbaf Applications
Engineer of MagneTek. Mr. Karbaf will provide discussion of
fluorescent ballasts and the basics of electronic ballast design and
application. The presentation will explain such terms as ballast
factor, ballast efficacy factor, crest factor, power factor, and
total
harmonic distortion as well as the differences between rapid start
and
instant start, parallel and series operations, and potted and
unpotted
designs. This presentation provides an encompassing overview of
electronic ballasts for those desiring to catch-up with or review the

technology.

Integration of Wide and Local Area Communications presented by Mark
Adamiak, Manager of Advanced Technology Programs at General Electric.

The advent of Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED's) has created a
river of data that needs to be integrated both locally and remotely.

The state of the art in LAN integration of data and Wide Area Network

options will be discussed. The status of the power industry's search

for the "Promised LAN" will be presented.

Engineering Education in the 21st Century presented by James Melsa,
Dean of Engineering at Iowa State University. In the knowledge-based

society of the 21st century, the critical and only sustainable
competitive advantage will be to possess the ability to learn faster
than the competitors. To meet these challenges, universities must be

skilled at creating, acquiring, and transferring knowledge, and
modifying their behavior to reflect new knowledge and insights.
Engineering education must be generated which is learning based,
practice oriented, and demands active involvement of the student.

Sharpening Your Career Skills for the 90's & Beyond presented by
Scott
Strong, President and CEO of Strong Information Services, Inc. Mr.
Strong's presentation will cover self-analysis of your skills and
ways
of developing and enhancing those skills making yourself more
marketable in the future.

2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Just-In-Time Manufacturing presented by Dr. Phillip Quo of the
University of Cincinnati (and ASME). Dr. Quo is an ASME
Distinguished
Lecturer and a recognized expert in manufacturing technology after 25

years experience in engineering design, manufacturing, management,
and
education. Dr. Quo will discuss the elimination of waste by
equipment, downtime, rework, scrap, excess lead time, overproduction,

and space utilization. The talk will present methods of pulling
parts
through the production system as they are needed, rather than pushing

them through as they are produced.

Digital Machine Protection presented by Mark Adamiak, Manager of
Advanced Technology Programs of General Electric. Motor and
Generator
protection has progressed into the digital domain. With that
transition comes advanced protection, control, and monitoring
features. Mr. Adamiak's presentation will look at those features and

examine some new concepts in motor and generator diagnostics and
protection.

Forensic Engineering and Human Factors presented by Frank A. Denbrock

of DNA Consulting Engineering (and IEEE). Mr. Denbrock is an IEEE
distinguished speaker who will be discussing the field of forensic
engineering and human factors in power engineering. Included in the
presentation will be how these fields relate to expert testimony in
courts of law.

3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The Status of Commonly Used Insulations for Power Conductors
presented
by Dave Mercier, Senior Applications Engineer at Southwire. Mr.
Mercier will discuss materials which are available today and their
suitability to various applications. The presentation will include
600 volt and medium voltage applications for that are used in
industrial, utility, commercial and residential applications. Mr.
Mercier is a member of the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers
and has served on the IEEE Power Engineering Society Insulated
Conductors Committee and the Industrial Applications Society
Petroleum
and Chemical Industry Committee.

Inverter Duty Motors and Issues presented by Todd Wimmer, Motor
Technical Consultant of Lincoln Motors. Variable Speed Drives have
been used for years but recently have gained popularity. With the
advent of IGBT technology AC drives have become smaller, less
expensive, and much more reliable. The downside to these benefits
appear in the attached AC motors. Mr. Wimmer will discuss the
effects
of IGBT's and what can be done to help alleviate the negative
effects.

The National Electrical Safety Code presented by Frank A. Denbrock of

DNA Consulting Engineering (and IEEE). The 1997 National Electrical
Safety Code (NESC) is in its final review for publication next year
(Aug. 1996). Mr. Denbrock will be reviewing the changes in the Code
along with other Safety Code related issues.

4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. KEYNOTE ADDRESS
Change: The New Critical Constant presented by Max Phillips, Director

of Community Affairs and Public Policy at U.S. West Communications.
What is the future of technology? Of entertainment? Of
telecommunications? What does the future hold for you? Success or
failure will be contingent on your ability to accept and embrace ever

increasing rates of change. In this keynote presentation, Mr.
Phillips explores the need for a "change foundation" and will project

you into the future where changes in technology, entertainment,
computing and telecommunications will impact the way we work, play,
and learn.

5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Commissioning to Avoid Indoor Air Quality Problems presented by Elia
Sterling of Theodor D. Sterling & Associates, Ltd. (and ASHRAE). The

risk of indoor air quality (IAQ) problems appearing in new and
reconditioned buildings is a concern of significant proportions.
This
presentation will discuss application of a commissioning process to
avoid IAQ problems through the ASHRAE Building Commissioning
Guideline
and provide an update on proposed changes to the ASHRAE Ventilation
Standard which will significantly impact design.

Electro-Hydraulics presented by Rich Nagel of Parker Hannifin
Corporation (and FPS). Mr. Nagel will discuss electro-hydraulics;
where they are today and where they are going tomorrow. The
presentation will include servo-controlled and proportional
controlled
valves and cylinders.

5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Transient Voltage Surge Suppression presented by Dale Hahs, Midwest
Regional Manager for Control Concepts Corporation. Mr. Hahs'
presentation will define transient surges and review their causes
before covering IEEE recommendations for surge arrestors and testing
procedures. The presentation will look at the Underwriter's
Laboratories present and future testing and listing of transient
surge
suppressors and the qualities of an effective suppression device.
