I am going to work on boat railings soon. I will need some polished S/S
tubing 3/4 and 1 inch. My guess is that type 316 is the best choice.
Can anyone advise me of a supplier in New England. I am located in Mass.
near Providence RI, but anywhere or internet-sales could be okay.

Thank you.
Larry

On the internet you could try www.onlinemetals.com. I've never bought from
them but they have a wide selection in their catalog.

What sort of quantities are you talking about? If small amounts of
common sizes, I'd talk to some of the local marine hardware fabricators.

If you need larger quantities or unusual sizes, do a search at Thomas
Register for ornamental tubing. When I was in the marine hardware
business we bought our tubing from Romac Metals in NC. They would take
tubing from inventory and polish to order. Setup and freight get
expensive on small orders.

Personally, I think using a low carbon SS (304L vs 304) is more
important than the difference between 304 and 316 for *deck* hardware.
When I was in the business, the difference in price between 304L and
316L tubing was significant, so we used 304L unless the customer
specified otherwise. The difference in bar and plate was not as great,
so generally stocked 316L for those items.

Underwater and anywhere crevice corrosion may be a problem you do want
to use 316L, and still keep an eye out for corrosion problems.

Larry,
You may already know this, but West Marine and Boat US both carry 7/8 and
1" SS railing tubing. It's from TACO, which can be found at
www.tacometals.com.

Hope that helps
