No messages for a couple days...

"I am for doing good to the poor, but I differ in opinion of the
means. I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not
making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of
it. In my youth I travelled much, and I observed in different
countries, that the more public provisions were made for the
poor the less they provided for themselves, and of course became
poorer. And, on the contrary, the less was done for them, the
more they did for themselves, and became richer." -- Benjamin
Franklin, /The Encouragement of Idleness/, 1766

No new threads anyway. I read this group on 3 different servers, and I have
not seen anything.

I've noticed alt ... blacksmithing is also sleeping.

Looks like the news groups are dying off. Once a great source
of information.

Don't forget that some people may be "recovering" from all of the
partying... <grin>

Im not sure any are actually dying off..but some are far more active
than others. The guys who weld, mostly know how to weld by know..and
with the economy..there isnt a lot of money out there for the newby to
be dragging a new or used machine home, loading it up with
rod/wire/gas/tungstens and trying to learn how to use it.

Same way with the metalworking groups of all sorts, from what I can see.

Welding tends to be even a little more restricted than the machine tool
etc etc groups..after all...Everybody can weld in 5 minutes....right?

I fear or believe science.engineering.metallurgy is since
most of it was FAB line and specialty metal guys. Fabs are
for the most part overseas now - some still here and there
but San Jose was down to 1 active/teaching IC one and several
diode ones.

...roses is dormant due to the season.

With so many ISP's killing Usenet themselves some would have to
search out a new server.

Rec craft guns is way down in feeds. I think Usenet is giving
membership up to Yahoo groups of topics and other methods.

I just haven't had much to chat about in welding.
My recent focus is getting back into knifemaking after 15 years out.
Now it is just for fun, not for paying rent.

I did build a briefcase TIG setup with a tiny 80 amp 110 volt power
supply from harbor freight and a tiny aluminum argon bottle.

I just can't figure out how to defeat the hot start on the power supply.
If I could bypass that then it would work fine.

Total investment so far is $200.

Spent my holiday working on my house and smoking meats.

I do think usenet is not long for this earth.
ISP's would love to just dump them.
Too much hassle for such a legacy technology.

The Seattle Metalheads Yahoo group is pretty active so it has kind of
become my chat area of choice.

Anyway, the last time anybody asked TIG questions, I found I was beaten
to the punch by people quoting ME.

Kind of like.. When people ask who I am, I just say Google my name and
find out.
