Hi,
I am peforming safety tests for an equipment, during abnormal
condition tests I have some troubles.
There is a 220uF cap between 12V and ground when I short circuited
this capacitor the LM 338 regulators temperature reached 150 celcius
degree. In the datasheet of this regulator it says the operating
temparature is 125 celcius degree.
During this test no failure observed except this high temperature. The
equipment has metal enclosure. I could not decide that this is a
failure or not. No fire propogation risk and no explosion but
excessive temperature.
Please help me.

Was the temperature only for a short time period? The data-sheet
temperatures are usually a tad on the conservative side and generally for
continuous operation at such temperatures. Temperatures my exceed the data-
sheet briefly but are not recommended to be sustained. That the device
survived is probably a pass.
