What are the requirements of (or what type of environment makes up) a Class
1 Division 1 electrical classification?
Thanks
Bryan

1). Class 1 atmospheric hazards are divided into two divisions(1 and 2)
and also into
four groups (a ,b, c, and d). The divisions are summarized as follows.

2). Those locations in which flammable gases or vapors in the air in
quantities sufficient
to produce explosive or ignitable mixtures are classified as class1
locations.
3). If these gases or vapors are present under normal operations, they
are designated
Division1. An Example would be the inside of a paint spray booth.
Division 2 locations
would be locations where these flammable gases or vapors would be
handled but not
stored, areas adjacent to Division 1 locations would be classified as
Division 2 locations.
4). In both Divisions the requirements for electrical conduit are the
same, rigid metal conduit and explosion proof boxes. Refer to National
Electrical Code Section 501 for
further requirements. Hopefully this has been somewhat of help.

In regards to the 1999 NEC and Hazardous Locations (Article 500):

Class I locations pertain to flammable gases or vapors.
Division 1 means that those gases or vapors are normal present in sufficient
quantities to produce explosive or ignitable mixtures; (Div 2 if the gas or
vapor is only explosive or ignitable under 'abnormal' conditions).

The above is a rough generalization of the code. I highly recommend you get,
beg or borrow a copy of the National Electric Code to find out more.
