I'm planning on applying for a doctoral program in ocean engineering
starting in January or May 2000. Therefore, I'm trying to find
information about programs offered in English- and German- speaking
countries. Two questions I'm trying to answer:

1) Which universities offer such programs?

2) Where can I obtain third-party information about offerings of the
various universities?

3) Where should I look for internship opportunities in oean engineering?

Any advice is appreciated.

The top places in the states are as far as I know: the Florida Institute of
Techology, Woods Hole (which does it in cooperation with MIT), and Scripps.
FIT even has BSC programs specifically on ocean eng. I dont know too much
about it as I am a marine biologist but check those places out first.

I just got into UBC for my PhD in Sep. 1998. In terms of funding, contact
all the prof's you are interested in working with and talk to them about it.
Usually if you are good, they will find a way to support you.

Try Petersons internet site http://www.petersons.com for third party general
info.

I would suggest though, putting a more specific newsgroup posting on this
newsgroup stating what you are interested in and maybe the responses will
come. I have dne this job wise on the net and its worked.

Texas A&M Univsity, College Station Texas offers such a program in the
Civil Engineering Department. It shares some courses and faculty with
the Department of Oceanography in the College of Sciences. It seems
to have a solid reputation in that field, but then again I biased. I
escaped from their once before and my view of the world has been
affected while I was an inmate.

You could talk to some on in the Tech side of the US Navy, some of the
major oil companies, or perhaps the Army Corps of Engineers.

Along with those already noted, examine Florida Atlantic University in Boca
Raton, Florida. It is my alma mater from the early 80's, but I cannot speak
for the program today. They have a web site: www.oe.fau.edu. Should you want
info you can write to Susan Fish: sf...@oe.fau.edu. If you have any questions
they don't answer, my work address is lop...@hboi.edu. Maybe I can provide
some limited information. Good luck.

The Univ. of Calif at Berkeley also offers doctoral programs in ocean
engineering in two areas:The Ocean Engineering Group (formerly the Dept of
Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering) and in the Construction
Engineering and Management Group in Civil Engineering. The former is
mostly hydro analysis and structural theory, the latter is construction,
reliability, materials and human factors. The main web page for the
university is www.berkeley.edu, you can surf from there to the other
programs.

In the US:

Texas A&M, College Station
Oregon State Univ., Corvallis

University of Hawaii
MIT (they concentrate on Naval Architecture quite a bit)
University of Rhode Island
Duke University
University of Delaware

I have seen the labs in the first two schools and they are top rate.

If you're searching the web, don't confine yourself to Ocean Engineering
searches. A lot of Civil Engineering departments have faculty who
concentrate on research related to Ocean Engineering. I have a PhD in
Civil Engineering from UBC in Vancouver, where my research topic was
essentially in an ocean engineering area.

Good luck.
