I have a commercial/office site that has a drop of 48 feet or so from the
back of the site to the connection to existing sanitary sewer. The local
review agency specifies that any drop in a manhole greater than 2 feet be
accomplished using an inside drop manhole. I am interested in determining
what is the maximum practical drop in an individual manhole based on others'
experience. I have not discussed this with the local review agency yet (and
I will), I just wanted to get an idea of what works in the field first.
Also, the project site is located in Colorado, USA.
I look forward to any input!

Typically our regulators don't like the incoming sewer more than shoulder
high for obvious reasons...

I think two feet is the standard.

2' maximum without a drop connection is standard here in the states.
The drop connection can be either an inside or outside drop, I see
alot of retrofits going the outside drop route and new designs with
the interior drop. You did not mention the size of the sewer mains,
but if the mains are large enough, you might consider connecting
directly to the main with with a chimney sewer connection (an almost
vertical to vertical drop from the lateral down to the main connecting
in the top half of the pipe) These are used in Boston alot since the
sewers are so deep. If the manhole is not needed for other reasons
this would result in considerable savings over a 48-foot deep manhole.
