I don't go to the trouble of removing the parts from the board. I have
a large box into which I toss the whole circuit board. If I need a part,
I remove it then.

John

PS, if you like parts, forget TVs and head for those surplus/salvage
industrial auctions. Odds are you'll be the only one there who knows
what the parts do!

Perhaps this is a stupid question but... for those in the home hobbiest
arena, do yall routinely canabalise old radios, TVs, etc. for spare
parts? Seems like there should be some good components to be had such as
pots, transformers and so on. I don't know if its worth extracting
resistors, though.

Now if I can only convince my sig other that that B&W TV is simply
worthless...

When I started playing with electronics ... about 30 years ago ... that
was exactly what I did. It was the only way I could afford to play.

Things are not so easy these days, with lots of custom ICs and
PCB mounted resistors etc leaving leads which are a little
on the short side, as well as being more difficult to remove.

This (re: cannibal) can be a great source of parts but be careful of
stuff manuctured before the late 60's. C`a apacitors and transformers can
contain PCB's , some old relays have mercury wetted contacts and there
are other toxic items that were used as well.

Usually resistors arent worth bothering with, but just about anything else,
including direct soldered ics, SMT, connectors is fair game to me, as long
as I have the trusty Black and Decker heat gun !! Using one of them you can
clear something like a standard PC or AT motherboard sized PCB in about
15 minutes, with hardly any casualties!
