I am looking to buy an ISDN modem. Preferably something that interfaces to
a PC, just like a standard modem.
Anything out there that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Thanks

At least two of the major players in data communications market an ISDN
modem. IBM has the Waverunner and AT&T has an equivalent product. That's
the good news. The bad news is that amputation of at least one limb will be
necessary to pay for it.

I talked with my local phone company about ISDN and was informed that
it was not available in my area. She said that switched 56 was however.
I would need a CSU/DSU and could achieve 56 to 64k speeds. Anyone know
what Switched 56 is all about and where to get a CSU/DSU (whatever they
are)?

Save that arm ! There are many folks making ISDN modems, which are refered
to as Terminal Adapters (TAs) in the industry. I believe that Motorola has
one of the better ones from a cost perspective. But, the best way to quickly
research TA is to cruise over to Dan Kegel's Home Page

http://alumni.caltech.edu/~dank/isdn/

where there is an excellent list of ISDN equipment. Look for TAs. You might
also look at the PC card versions of TAs (also listed on Dan's pages).

Good Luck

Well, I know IBM makes one. It's called the "WaveRunner Digital Modem"

>Anything out there that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Oh, sorry. It's from IBM, so it WILL cost you an arm, a leg and a second
mortgage on your house. I saw it in "IBM Networking" 'magazine',
in the same issue as an external 2400bps modem large enough to house
a small dog. Oh well, if IBM makes them, there must be a market for
cheaper ones too...

You should be asking this on one of the following newsgroups;
comp.dcom.isdn, com.dcom.telecom, comp.dcom.telecom.tech,
comp.dcom.modems, alt.dcom.telecom. (it might be com.dcom.telecom.isdn)

BTW, they aren't modems, they're dsu/csu's, or TA's.

I'm seeing prices in the $500 range for such stuff, but they also say
that the $$ will be coming down.

You should have kept talking to your phone company. Get back on the horn
and ask them for some literature and other info, prices..

The reviews have been good on ISDN, as far as thruput, and stuff. But
the prices are still high, and the billing is measured, so the more time,
the more $$.

D.C. Hayes Co. - the most famous modem-maker in all the land
- has them. Log onto their BBS to find more information:

(800) 874-2937 - N-8-1 - up to 28.8 Kbaud

HO>Anything out there that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Oh? And from which planet have you come? Here on Earth, or at
least my part of it, Ma Bell charges $5,000 for installation
and $2,500 per year service/maintnenance fee for one ISDN
connection -- and you're worried about the price of a modem ???

I recommend Hayes because they've served me well over the years,
their customer service is attentive and their products as
reliable as gravity -- or at least sunlight. But they're not
the low-buck boys. I'd expect to pay $1,500 to $2,000 for a
fair (if not necessarily top of the line) ISDN modem at today's
prices.

Richly yours,
Robert Michaels - Detroit, U.S.A.

Hayes makes the "ISDN System Adapter" modem (NT1 & TA all-in-one) for about
$600 which is relatively cheap these days. It works in an enhanced Hayes AT
Command Codes so it is likely that it will function with most terminal
software. It connects just like a regular modem. Only one down side, it
only operates at 64k it doesn't do Double-B bonding for 128k.

Cheers,
Chris

I've seen a similar device that will do 128K and you could talk to it with
your existing software, as it has a 16550 serial card with enhanced
buffering and souped up clock rates.
Responds to the AT command set too.
IIRC it was aroun 1300$ total.

MAybe my quoting is off a bit, but, yes, there are a few ISDN TA/NT-1
("modem") makers out there. IBM makes a nifty DSP card that talks
ISDN; Adtran (Huntsville, AL) has a good line of TAs.

Verify that any TA you buy: 1. has a compatible NT-1 included
or available, and 2. can talk to your local CO switch (sorry, even
today you must know the mfr and software release level of the
phone company's equipment before you can use a TA).

ftp to info.bellcore.com/pub/isdn for tons of stuff pertaining to ISDN
services and products.

Need an NT-1? I have a small quantity available, $200 per.
