I've checked Mouser, Digi-Key, and Jameco. JDR has a 16.7"L x 16.7"W x
8.5"H case with 19"W x 8.69"H front panel, model 3120H (18 lbs) $84.95.
Does anyone know of any other mail-order sources?
Another vendor you might try is PAIA; their catalog is at least
partly online:
They've sold std rack mount enclosures in the past, but maybe not
more than 2 spaces high; I don't recall. Their web page shows
a new type of enclosure, where you can build the front panel
out of smaller pieces (to put projects side by side).
Some of the most affordable such enclosures that I've seen are
sold by Sescom; I don't have the address handy, but they advertise
in Electronics Now and other mags. They will also machine the
front panel for you.
Depending on what quality you are looking for, you might try
just buying the 19" wide faceplate (some of the vendors you
mentioned sell these separately at reasonable prices) and
attaching a cheap aluminum chassis to it. You may have to
cut out the side of the chassis, or drill the holes twice.
But it could end up a lot cheaper.
Finally, another source for blank 19" rack plates is mailorder
music catalogs, since much pro audio/studio eqpt comes in
19" rack packages. Such catalogs also offer the racks themselves
at prices much cheaper than what you'll find in an electronics
eqpt catalog.
Good luck, and please let us know what you come up with. I'm
interested in affordable 19" enclosures for my own projects
(which is why I've stumbled upon the stuff just described!).

Newark has some, but they aren't cheap. Rack-mount stuff comes in heights
that are multiples of 1 3/4 inches, so you'd have your choice of 5 1/4"
or 7" in height. They'll run about $100 or so by the time you buy the
various parts. They also have some cheaper ones, but only in 1 3/4" and
3 1/2" heights. The 3 1/2" ones are around $60 for 8" deep, or $80
for 16" deep. Call them at 800-298-3133 to get a catalog. They also
have local stores in a lot of cities.

Depends on exactly what you want; it sounds like you want a nice box
that also happens to be rack-mountable, and you want to buy it.
I find that for many applications it is much cheaper to do the following:
1. Get a blank aluminum rack panel. (Or, make one from aluminum plate.)
Drill, paint or anodize, and label to your taste.
2. Get a chassis that will bolt to the rack panel. The chassis may be
anything from a minibox (or multiple miniboxes, real nice when you've
got a highly modular circuit that needs good shielding between parts)
to a classic tubes-and-big-capacitors-on-top-with-small-components-
mounted-underneath chassis to a big steel box. Reinforce the box
if it's going to be big and have heavy things in it.
3. For the really professiona touch, find a pair of rack slides.
($7 - $20 a pair at surplus shops.)
If you have some machine-shop and sheet-metal tools and a bit of time,
you can make very professional looking items for a very small cash outlay
per box.

Mark V has some inexpensive ones: 1-800-521-MARK or 800-423-FIVE. I
don't see any that large in their catalog, though.
