I'm busy doing my final year elec eng thesis and I need to get hold of a mirror
galvonometer or similar device to deflect a laser. It must have a range of at
least 5 degrees and a bandwidth of about 10 KHz. I can't get hold of this
device here in South Africa and to import it from the UK will cost about 900
pounds and that excludes import duty etc etc.
I am also looking for a laser in the 5 to 20 Watt power range (visible).
Could someone please post some addresses of places in the USA where I could get
hold of this equipment and if possible prices and technical specifications
would be a great help.
Thanks
Mike

10KHz is faster than ordinary mirror galvanometers will go, even
for small deflection angles. There are resonant scanners available in
that range from General Scanning Corporation, but they're expensive.
Slow (150Hz) scanners are easily available, though. Try Silicon Valley
Surplus, 1273 Industrial Parkway W., Bldg. 460, Haywood, CA
94544-7025 USA. Phone 510-582-6602.
For low-cost lasers, try Meredith Instruments, P.O. Box
1724, Glendale, AZ, 85301. Small units with laser diodes in the 5 to 30
milliwatt range are available.
If you really want a 5 to 20 watt laser, those too can be
obtained, but they're big, expensive, and moderately dangerous. You also
need mirrors with adequate power-handling capability. Do you really need
power in that range?

Honeywell has been making mirror galvos with a bandwidth better than
1 mhz for better than 20 years. The light beam oscillograph I worked
on when I began my career in the early 70s was old hat.
