Can one neutral connection run two power meters ?
My Meter
A1 B1 C1 D1
Hot Cold Cold Hot
My Neighbour
A2 B2 C2 D2
Hot Cold Cold Hot
The scenario is like this - in single phase wiring one hot/live/phase
wire enters the power meter and one neutral/cold wire from the
electric pole (property of power company).
Circuit - Single phase wiring, AC 220 Volts, 50 Hertz.
My Meter
A1 - Phase/Live/hot Source from power company
B1 - Neutral Source from power company
C1 - Neutral/cold load to my residence
D1 - Phase/live/Hot Load to my residence
My Neighbour
A2 - Phase/Live/hot Source from power company
B2 - Not Connected
C2 - Not Connected (the wire is physically disconnected)
D2 - Phase/Live/hot Source to their residence
A1 & A2 source is common
B1, B2, C2 are common.
Even when C1 & D1 were removed, B1 (neutral) exhibited the load of 4
amperes in normal routine, while A1 exhibited zero amperes.
Their neutral (source) is taken from B1 and (load) fed back to B1.
Now my meter keeps on moving with slightest load while their meter
does not move even when their is fridge running continuously.
What technical justification is put forward on this ? Why my meter
moves so fast even with the slightest load and while their meter
remains stationary. Their meter moves only when they put high load of
say 2 amperes.
Using clamp meter, I always found high current at B1. Please help me
to solve my problem.
The inside architecture of my meter is that B1 & C1 are solidly joined
with each other. At phase/hot/live point there is thin wire joined to
one end of the small transformer coil and the other end of the
transformer coil is joined with the neutral strip which joins B1 & C1.
Thanking You for your feedback.

Dear Ken,
I am a computer hardware consultant by profession and not a
professional electric personnel. I very well understand the dangers
associated with AC wiring which could be fatal if little knowledge is
applied. So all the information I had posted above was with the help
of local electrician (not a true expert professional) who traced the
circuits for me as per my request. Why I sought for expert help, was
for the matter that in last four months my power bills shot up. This
was despite the fact that in my house of three rooms, I had switched
to 18 watts compact flouroscent lamps and 40 watts flourescent
tubelights. I do not have any power consuming appliance other than
one 2000 watts electric geyser and 500 watts water pump which is used
only by me and they are automatically switched off with timer circuits
attached to them. The maximum time for usage of each of them is 1
hour. Everything was normal till September 2001, but after my
neighbours got the circuits changed my problems with huge power bills
began. Despite controlling and cutting down on electricity
consumption, I could not cut any of my rising bills. And what is the
use of reading and writing, when I could not get any technical
justification from local electricians.
You are absolutely right in alerting me with the dangers of AC
current. And I am also afraid of AC voltages. I could not forget the
incident that in my high school days, a fellow student died of
electrocution due to carelessness. Even while holding PVC shielded
clamp meter which measures amperes, I take all precautions like
wearing dry rubber sole shoes and no physical contact with wires of
any nature. Use of clamp meter is just placing the clamp on pvc
insulated surface of phase or neutral wire. There is no physical
contact at all. Nor I am interested in doing any kind of
experimentation which poses any kind of physical contact with wires, a
potential threat.
I know my limited usage of power very well. So I decided to
investigate myself rather sitting dumb and silent and end up paying
high power bills. Today I had called for expert electrician working
for a power company, who detected leakage in conduit pipes, as wires
reach upto third floor where I live, from first floor common
connection from electric pole. So now he will test it with his
instruments and also inspect the wires physically for cuts which are
concealed in underground conduit pipes. Also he had installed another
electric meter in my premises at third floor, from which I can tally
the readings of submeter and the meter installed by power company. Its
indeed a heavy price I had paid to local electricians with little
knowledge who are unable to give any technical justification. None of
them seem to know what Ohm's law is ?
The distance between the two meters is less than a 12 inches, which
are placed side by side by the power company.
And I have no intention of stealing or playing with fatality. To tell
truth further, those guys fed neutral through earth wire and there was
no earthing concept in my home wiring circuit. Now the expert
engineer, removed all these hazardous things from my circuit and will
install ground/earth wire.
Thank you everyone for your kind support. Now my problems are solved
with expert guidance and tracing.
I'm glad you were able to get wise counsel. Sorry if I seemed a little
harsh, but plenty of people pop up on the NG's who are clearly dicing with
death. If you were playing about in the meter, then, frankly, you were too.
I'm a professional who knows his limits - I don't play with the supply.
It sounds indeed like you have leaky circuits, possibly also an illegal tap
on your wires. Best of luck.

Now lot of the problems are getting solved with the expert help from
people like you. I am thankful to you all. The expert engineer who
gave his valuable time, traced illegal phase/live tapping too, but the
wires were cut as if they came to know about investigation process.
Due to limitation of time, expert engineer could not inspect wires
physically. He will be sending some foreman to do this job. However he
told me, that they have built some kind of reverse phase too. Now I am
getting some clue, how some of my electrical appliances like microwave
oven(non-repairable now), my invertor charging coil and battery went
dead.
When the expert engineer removed wires from my meter physically, some
of my lights got activated even after mains supply was shut off. He
had disconnected the circuits so that no reverse phase from other
residences reaches my residence. Now the expert engineer had asked me
to get out of all this mess and get supply directly and separate earth
connection from pole to meter. For this I will be approaching power
company soon as it has to be sanctioned legally. As now there are
three or more residences sharing common connection on main line coming
from pole and some seem to be playing with theft of power.
For my knowledge, I wish to know, how serious was reverse phase
problem ? I could not ask expert engineer, as he had rush to attend
some urgent problem at power station in other state.
Also he calculated the load and usage. It came to about approx 6 units
a day and the total should have been 180 units per month if I stayed
30 days and no touring. The most disturbing aspect was I was out of
town for two weeks and to be safe I shut off mains supply while going
out and was shocking when I received bill of 440 units.
Now I am getting meter reading same in the meter installed in my
premises which is at third floor and the one installed by power
company at first floor. I hope my nightmare is coming to end but will
always be alert in future.
With Regards
Sanjiv
