Is it possible to use floppy drive or hard disk stepper motors to make
simple robots for experiment. Any info with schematic is highly appreciated.

Yes. The cube shaped ones are best. The 'pancake' variety can be used
for some things. To learn about steppers, ftp to ftp.armory.com
/pub/user/rstevew and use: mget stepper* to get the two best files.
The mirror site is: ieee.cas.uc.edu /pub/electronics/ftp.armory.com

It certainly is. I have had great success doing just that. keep a look out
for really old 5.25 inch drives, these drives have larger steppers in them.
I pulled a couple out of an old Kapro CPM machine. The stepper I have in front
of me is a type 'KPM4-001' made by Tandon motors in India.

Another source with Identical motors is inside old photocopiers which are used
to adjust the magnification of the copy.

These motors are simple to drive being standard 5 wire with one being a common
return.

Hope this helps.

I have a project I did a while ago listed on my homepage.
It used 2 of the nice square 5 1/4" stepper motors to control
the direction of a water pump (cannon?). The project was a
PC controlled "robotic water cannon".

The web page is listed below.

The project is in the Engineering section under Hardware Hacks.

I have used floppy drive motors for experiments successfully. I have put it out on the internet.
You can ftp it from ftp.ee.ualberta.ca. The file is /pub/cookbook/comp/parallel/flpystpr.zip
