It certainly is. I have had great success doing just that. keep a look out
for really old 5.25 inch drives, these drives have larger steppers in them.
I pulled a couple out of an old Kapro CPM machine. The stepper I have in front
of me is a type 'KPM4-001' made by Tandon motors in India.
Another source with Identical motors is inside old photocopiers which are used
to adjust the magnification of the copy.
These motors are simple to drive being standard 5 wire with one being a common
return.

I have used floppy drive motors for experiments successfully. I have put it out on the internet.
