A. W. Sperry does not make DMMs; they buy them from various Taiwanese or
Korean makers, and have their name placed upon them. In this business you
generally get approximately what you pay for. Most of these house brand
multimeters are not particularly rugged, and are poorly protected from
environmental and electrical assault.
If the price is low enough that you can afford to replace the DMM if you
accidentally sit on it, go ahead. If you are willing to pay upwards of
$100 for a good instrument, I can give you many better recommendations--
of course.

Speaking of HP, I have an HP 6284A power supply in mint condition with
crowbar option, which I might consider selling, or trading for the newer
HP power supply with the digital meters (but not as tightly regulated
as the 6284A).
Cognoscenti know about the 6284A... best offer over $500 probably
takes it. (Email please...)
