Sorry if this is the wrong group, but my system crashed, and I have
lost the message I am replying to concerning the I2C Specification and
interfacing the I2C bus to a microprocessor.

1st) I have a copy of the Philips "The I2C-bus Specification", free from
any Philips distributor as far as I know, its a bit long to mail, but
if there are any specific questions, I can answer them.
Alternativly if you can get hold of a copy of the Access Bus (TM)
specification, this is just I2C with a different driver to allow
it to go further outside the PCB environment.

2nd) Philips do do a chip PCD8584 with is a I2C comunication IC designed
to connect to most microprocessors, it can be a slave, a master or
even monitor the bus (great for debugging systems). There is a
company in the UK (probably available else were) that sell a PC
card using this chip.

Hope thats enough to help.

Actually, ACCESS.bus is a software protocol on the same I2C hardware that
includes specific commands (and responses), maximum/minimum response
times, device descriptors, checksums, etc. There is nothing special about
ACCESS.bus that permits it to "go further outside the PCB environment" other
than spec'ing low capacitance cables, and shielded RJ11 jacks.
