Audio amp IC's - preferences solicited

I need to build a number of audio booster amplifiers. I need about
5 watts output minimum, single channel. I've been using a NEC
IC (rated 20 watts - don't remember the part #) and have had
mixed success with it (seems to oscillate very easily, distortion
begins to become plainly audible above about 4 watts - might just
be a bad device; not sure). Minimum of 20 dB gain.

A minimal number of external components is also a key factor.

Not looking for audiophile quality here - they'll be driving 8 ohm
communication speakers in automobiles. Anyone have any particular favorites?
Specs? Prices? Dealers? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The NEC device works, doesn't require all that much as far as external
devices, but I've had mixed emotions after using the prototype I made
for the last few months. If I get any email giving supporting
arguments for this device, I might build another amp with a new IC
to see if it works any better.

Oh. Almost forgot. Needs to run off +13.8 VDC.

Try the NTE1389. I dont rember the pinout, but it is an
integrated device, needing only preamp levels in. It provides
20W of GREAT sound. I used a pair of them in my Sanyo car stereo.
They come in a 12 pin SIP package. I used them to replace the NEC
uPC1230H. It also crosses with the ECG1389. Hope this helps!

Try the LM 2002 or LM 2003 series audio drivers. Output in the
bridge config. is about 16W, and its THD is a little high, but the
ICs are virtually indestructible. Works from 8 to 18V and has
current capability of 3.5Amps. Thermal shutdown et. al.

I have used them very successfully, and I like them because they
have very few extra components, and don't require a regulated power
supply.

You can probably still get an ECG 804 or equivalent from a place that sells
semiconductors to the TV repair trade. While you're at it, get an ECG
or NTE catalog if you don't have one... they're extremely useful.

For that matter, MCM Electronics (1-800-543-4330) lists the following:
LM378 $ 7.32
ERS804 $12.48 (sub. for ECG 804 which is sub. for LM378)

The MCM catalog is *really* worth having. The LM378 may be discontinued
to OEMs, but it's still available in the replacement/repair trade, and
probably will be for a while.
