This Pioneer PD-TM1 cd player is an older 3 cartridge, 18 disk player that
originally wouldn't read the cd's at all. I cleaned the pick up lens and all
was good. I played 3 disks all the way through and there was no skipping or
errors. The customer picked it up and called me the next day and said it
started to skip. Looking through the archives, I found one post about this
model. Mark Z. indicated that the cure for this problem was to replace the
white pickup cable. From my memory though, the original cable is a dark gold
color. Is the white pickup cable supposed to replace the gold one? Does this
model use the RF-320CH-10570 spindle motor that always fails?

Thanks for your replies.

If it has the gold cable the cable is probably OK. Yes, I think it does use
that motor.

Yeah, got a new e-mail and hopefully an anti-spam return address.

The old cable was white and prone to failure. The replacement was a gold
one, which in the 18 disc still could fail.
Also find out if the unit was ever used to provide 24/7 music. I had one
guy that had 3 of them in 3 different stores. In all three of them the
optics would simply wear out right at 1 year and 9 months. It was apparant
as the RF level when viewed on the o'scope was just below tolerance even
with the optics clean after the unit was playing about 5 to 6 hours.

When cold the rf level would be just within tolerance of 1.25 V P-P, as the
unit would run the RF level would suddenly drop to a level below the
replacement threshold of 1.1 V P-P. Nominal on a good new laser is 1.4 to
1.6 V P-P RF pattern level.

Yes, the spindle motor could easily fail on this unit. Typically though it
would intermittently not start playing a disc and you could hear/see the
motor shuddering.

Thanks Mark and David,

The customer is bringing it back in and before I start replacing parts, I'll
check the rf level and listen for motor irregularities. Hopefully, the problem
will not be intermittent.

The player has returned. I adjusted the rf level to 1.4p-pV. It was below 1V.
What happens is that the disk will play for a while. Then the music stops, and
the smooth eye pattern develops an oscillation in it. Sort of a modulation of
the eye pattern itself superimposed on the main signal. Does this indicate a
faulty pick up assembly? The set is used in a retail store and probably gets
more than average use.

Thanks for your reply.
