I have two JVC VCR's (Different Models) that both have the exact same problem.
The tracking is very poor. It looks as though only the bottom portion of the
picture is good the top is all snowy. I successfully adjusted the tape guide
and the picture was corrected. I then retightend the tiny screws at the base to
lock in that position. The VCR will continue to play well until I stop or eject
the tape. When I do this , then attempt to watch a tape, it looks as though no
adjustment was made at all. Its back to where I started.

I have adjusted the guides several times. Each time the picture screws up
again after I stop or eject/ then reinsert and play.

Any suggestions on how to remedy this problem.

Thanks,
Milt

Common problem. 3.3uF surface-mount capacitor on underside of drum, an the
drum motor pcb. A miniature 3.3uF @ 50 volts will replace it easily. The
black side of the original cap is the negative side.

Assuming your mechanical adjustments are holding, replace the 3.3 uF cap on
drum board.

* Another common cause for a band of video noise at the top or bottom of screen
on some JVC models: Defective capacitor (may be C6, 3.3 uF, 50 V) on drum
motor resulting in bad PG pulse. It looks like a tantalum cap but a regular
electrolytic should be satisfactory. Even Radio Shack will likely have a
replacement.

In some severe (or shall we say, strange) cases, good and bad/no video may
occur randomly each time the VCR enters PLAY mode but will remain that way
until the tape is unloaded.

(From: Mark Shoberg (mew...@webtv.net)).

When replacing the 3.3uf cap on the motor board (this is for the older
bottom mounted types) just cut away the plastic piece covering it a little
bit. This way you don't risk damaging the video heads and it is easier as
well.

Hi there...

When the guids are in the playing position, are they loose???
If so, they you must look underneith to see how to tighten them.
If they are not tight, they can also not be sitting properly into the-end
stops. Also, warn guides or guide bearings can also give such problems.

Did you check that the pinch roller is not shiny, or the capston shaft is
very clean???

Tape tesnion and break band pressure also must be checked...

JVC With Tracking problem,FIXED. Thanks to the wisdom of all of those who
advised me to replace 50v capacitor on the underside of the video drum. I did
so and my problem is now solved on both of these VCR's. I greatly appreciate
the time and wisdom shared by all who responded and turned on the LIGHT.

Look for the surface mount electrolytic cap on the
drum cylinder, this will be located under the chassis connected
to
the lower drum assem. I believe the original cap is a surface
mount
3.3 uf @ 50V. I have used a 3.3 uf or a 4.7uf cap with success
(it
does NOT have to be a surface mount replacement) Replace this
cap
and you'll get your whole picture back again! The problem you
exhibit is fairly common with jvcs.

I found this answer at www.anatekcorp.com/faq/vcr.htm. I've used it once and
it worked for me.

Good Luck
