I am not sure what you mean here..If you need the idler wheel driving the
flywheel (abt 1.5in. diamwheel with rubber edge, often needs replacement
because of rubber detoriation)The Norwegian company Tandberg Radiofabrikk
no longer exists (Tandberg still makes satellite receivers and so on, plus
some high-end audio gear)The Tandberg tape recorders have good reputation, and
parts are so much in demand that a Norwegian company called Norsk
Elektronikkservice has made up a series of often needed replacement parts for
Tandberg tape recorders.I just spoke to a colleague of mine who works at a
Tandberg service center,he says the idler wheel costs 250.- NKr (about 45$).
The pressure roller(often also called idler, presses tape against capstan)
costs 160.- NKr(about 25$). Not exactly cheap, but available.. He didn't
know of US sources,but there may well be, as many Tandbergs were imported to
the US.

Sorry, didn't read closely enough..
Seems you need to adjust the take-off clutch (felt disk under the left reel)
You should have a service manual and preferably a dynamometer to measure the
torque before you start with this.

This is great news! I have a few Tandbergs, from the '50s to the mid-70's, and
nothing really failes in these machines, _except_ the rubber parts. I have never
had any problems with the flywheel drive idler on the 'figure-8-single-motor'
type deck, but the drive belt and pressure roller crack and dry up. It's strange
that these parts seem to be of so bad quality on the Tandberg machines; I have
Grundig and Philips recorders from the 50's and although the pressure rollers
tend to get hard and belts don't sit as tight as they should, they still don't
break down in the same way as the Tandberg rubber stuff does. Interestingly
enough, the pressure roller seems to be the same for all models, at least from
the 1950's-vintage model 2 until the ~1976 model 9100 series. Amazing! Apart
from the three-motor drive in the 9000X and 10X, the mechanical drive was also
basically the same during these years although it got more and more refined.
However, regarding the original poster, if I remember correctly the 3600 is one
of the single motor decks with one motor driving clutches beneath the reel hubs
with a figure 8 belt. There is an idler which drives the flywheel, but it isn't
used in any other modes.
Anyway, I have found that on these later model (i.e. 70's) machines, the drive
from the belt pulleys to the wheel is performed using three neoprene (?I think
it is anyway) rubber pads beneath the actual wheel hubs. Earlier (50's-60's
style) use a different approach, I think a felt clutch simply, which doesn't
wear out. To get at them the wheel hubs have to be dismantled (an easy task if I
remember properly, just remove a nut on the back of the motorboard). These
rubber pads also tend to deteriorate over time, resulting in lack of drive for
the hub in question. I replaced the worn-out rubber pads on my 3300X with
standard off-the-shelf grey self-adhesive plastic rubber feet, cut down in size,
although if you can find something better, it's probably worth trying that out,
because the rubber feet tend to grip a bit too hard, putting strain on the tape
when breaking. My 3300X is only used as a backup for my 9100X so I don't worry
too much.
Would be nice to hear of any further experiances, or _any_ further info on
Tandbergs!
