Sounds like the tape end sensor LED. Very common problem. It sets under the
prism in the middle of the transport, right between the tape reels. The MCM
part number is 25-480.

Reel sensor if the tape counter doesn't change when the reels are turning.
Dirty or bad.

You're right, the vcr's behave exactly as if they reached the end of the
tape. I was (mistakenly) thinking it was the reel sensor on the supply
side. I'll try the sensor and let you know. Again, thanks very much.

I'm pretty sure the tape counter indicates activity on all of them; when
I get to the shop I'll verify yeh or nay then proceed as you suggested.
I do remember an ingenious arrangement of light conductors/prisms
incorporated in an acrylic casting. Lots of smarts in the vcr's today.
Too bad they are so fragile. Again, thanks for your advice.

I had a Philips machine with the same problem. The tape would play about 10
seconds. The counter would count the time correctly. Then, it would go to stop
mode. I noticed a lot of previous posts in deja.com about the fault. However
changing the tape end sensor LED didn't correct the fault. Resoldering the
connections to the receiving photo transistors did fix it.

Good luck.
