The standard degauss function of my monitor doesn't work anymore. Now
red and green band cover my screen. When I 'wash' my screen with a
magnet the worst goes away, but not completly!

Is there a good (and save) way to manually degauss your monitor???

Get a soldering gun. Turn it on and hold it sideways next to the
screen (the tip will be pointed off to the side). Move it around in
front of the screen. Do not turn it off until you have moved it away
from the screen. The AC magnetic field from the gun will act the same as
a real degaussing coil. Never use a regular magnet on a CRT screen.

Hi Bob,

Why not fix the fault? if you feel able to work inside a monitor, it's
not likely to be the coil. It's worth replacing the posistor which is
the usual problem, you will find it near the place the degauss coil
plugs into the board it's usually an oblong black plastic box about
1" high with 3 pins some have 2. You must replace it with correct
type see No on top, they are heat sensitive devices that pass the AC
power to the coil, in doing so heat up increasing resistance this in
turn cuts coil off. A second resistor also heats up keeping the first
hot to prevent the coil comeing on again until the monitor has been
off for a short time, there are only two components in most monitors
for degauss the coil and the posistor. To be on the safe side unplug
the coil and check continuity? they are only a few ohms 10 to 40 about,
but as I said the coils in most cases are OK hope this helps
