I have a Panasonic KX-TCM422-W phone and the base has lost the ability
to communicate with the handset. The handset works with another
identical phone, so it is definitely a problem with the base station.
The phone has had a very easy life and was never dropped or abused.

When I press "Talk" on the handset, the light comes on and it hunts
for several seconds, then I get 3 quick beeps, then it shuts off. The
base works fine by itself (answering machine, speakerphone, dialling
etc), but no communication between the base and hansdet takes place.

I followed the reset instructions from Panasonic (pull out battery, AC
adapter and phone line for several minutes, press "Locator/Intercom"
etc) but it didn't help.

I was told I need to do a full system reset by shorting out some
contacts on the main board (the incoming and outgoing messages remain
intact after the factory reccommended reset so something in there
still has old settings).

I was told I could leave it unplugged for a couple of weeks and it
might reset everything, but I'm sure the factory techs know which
contacts to jumper to do it immediatley.

Anybody have any ideas? Right now the phone doesn't work, so you can
be aggressive in your suggestions.

Thanks.

have you cleaned the contacts on the handset and the base station?
