Hi there

I'm new here. Found you lookin' for repair tips. My discman has 'died' only
one week after warranty expired. It started one week before expiration, when
suddenly it would not read any CD anymore. It didn't recognize it, gave no
indication of the amount of song-tracks, nothing. But a few days later,
trying for one last time, it suddenly played again like nothing happened.
But then, two weeks later the problem reoccurred, and here I sit with a
one-year-old-100-dollar discman, without a clue (well, I've got some
guesses, but maybe one of you has been here before, and has been
victorious).

Got tips, or maybe just feeling the need to share in my 'misery', please
post.

thanx
Mr. Quizz

If I were you I would not be wasting time trying to fix this myself, I would
call Sony and explain the failure symptoms and the warranty time issue.
This could be an expensive repair so it would be wise to make Sony jump
through the warranty hoops. Don't delay any longer.......call them today.
Look at your warranty card and owners manual for their warranty procedure
and phone number.

I have a few tips. One problem i've seen a lot with Sony discmans is
the laser track lubrication dries up and the laser gets stuck somewhere
in the middle when you shut it off, so when you try to start it the
laser doesn't go back against the spinner in the middle. Just open the
lid and look and see if the laser is right up against the spinner where
it should be or out in the middle somewhere. It it is, try pushing it
back up against the spinner and try starting it. This might temporarily
fix the problem. If it does, take it apart and find something to
lubricate it with.
Also try cleaning the lens with a q tip and some alcohol that doesn't
have suds in it. This probably won't help. It sounds like the laser is
stuck to me by the way that it finally started working fine again.
Also my friend had an old crappy portable cd player that stopped
reading cd's and he put a screwdriver against the laser and it "popped
up" and then worked again for a while after that. So in this case the
laser itself has gotten stuck in the up and down movement. You might
wanna try that.
These all could possibly solve your problem, and if they don't your
laser is probably worn out.
Email me and let me know if it works. mken...@kos.net
Also how often have you used your discman in the last year? and what
model is it?
Hope this helps you.

You could start by trying to carefully clean the lens with plastic eyeglass
cleaner. Alcohol can damage the plastic lens depending on the quality of
plastic they used.
Beyond that you unit is way more than 2 weeks out of warranty. It had 90 days
labor and 1 year parts at best. Typical major labor is $55 reimbursement from
Sony. I would still call them if it is a major parts failure the cost of the
part could easily run more than the unit did new.

Here in Canada Sony's warranty on most things is the regular 1 year
parts and labor. Lucky us. Canada must have higher standards for
product warranties or something. I think extended warranties are a
great thing for portable cd players. Get a 4 year one that replaces the
cd player when it dies and you should have to use it at least twice. If
you get a Kenwood portable cd player you can use the warranty 4 times
in 2 years until you get a Sony player that holds up a lot better
(this is what happened to me)
Anyways I still believe the problem with this player is probably the
laser unit (that holds the laser) is stuck from lack of lubrication. I
learned of this problem a while ago and have saved a couple discmans
from the trash bin by telling them about it. Just push the laser

against the spinner in the middle.
Let me know if it works.

cold solders on the headphone jack or a bad connection in the headphones
themselves.This is a common problem.
