When I try and play a tape in my audio cassette player it plays fine till I
get approx half way through when it stops playing (like it has reached the
end of the tape). If I then press play again it plays for a minute or so and
stops again. It does this numerous times and with all the tapes I have
tested so far.

Anyone have any idea what could be wrong?

Thanks

Does it happen with multiple tapes or just one? If just one, it's
possible that tape is sticking at that point.

If multiple, it sounds like the pressure sensor that senses tape
tension may be too sensitive and need replacement. Tape players use
this sensor to auto shut off at the end of a side or stop rewinding
when the tape reaches the beginning.

It happens with multiple tapes, so it sounds like the pressure sensor is
gone. Thanks for your help

I haven't seen a "pressure sensor" in a cassette player for 20 years, in a
cheapie. That was a plastic post that stuck in the tape path, actually
relying on tape slack to NOT push the sensor in until the end of the tape,
when the tape would go taut and push the sensor in. Most cassette decks
use an opto interrupter on the spindles or tape counter to sense motion.
Some low-power mechanisms have a mechanical cam that trips the shut off
with lack of motion. In general, mid-tape shut offs are due to worn rubber
belts or rubber discs, reducing the torque until the deck is unable to
move the tape any more. The solution is to replace the worn rubber parts,
which may not be worth the cost unless it's a nice deck.

I will assume the tested tapes work fine in other decks.

I have that problem on my Sony dual capstan unit. If the tape slacks, it
stops. The cures is to clean the capstans, and check belts.
