Just wondering if anyone has seen anything similar.
I recently got a Sony 1040Q video projector (mfd 06/88). The problem was
some discoloration (no green) in certain areas of the projected image; when
I opened up the projector, I inspected the CRT guns and noticed floating
debris (some of it is baked on the glass) in what appears to be some sort of
mineral oil or cooling liquid in a little chamber at the front of the green
CRT gun (model no. SD187G). The chamber that contains the liquid appears to
be factory sealed and part of the gun assembly itself, save for two small
screws whose purpose I can't determine (and don't want to try to take out in
case they hold something in the CRT gun itself). I called Sony and the
technician I spoke to wasn't able to help me, short of selling me a brand
new green gun. The gun itself looks and works OK with no visible burn
marks.
My question is - has anyone seen something like this before? Do you know if
that chamber containing the liquid is detachable from the CRT itself and if
yes, who would be able to do the repair (clean the debris, reseal and refill
the chamber with the liquid)? Also, does anyone know of a source that might
sell used CRT guns? Besides being fairly expensive, replacing only one gun
with a new one would likely result in a bad color balance due to the
increased brightness of the new gun, and would also require recalibration
after about six months (during which time the gun loses about 50% of its
brightness)...

Depending on the model, the coolant may be replaced without replacing the
CRTs.
