I'm pretty sure someone here knows this and could help. Sorry if I'm
too far off topic.

I want to buy a basic cable converter box to replace one that died.
Everyone tells me they sell them at K-mart etc., but I can't find one.
I want output on channel 2 and at least 83 channels (1-78 and 95-99)
as were on my old box. I don't want volume control or descrambling or
any other features. An old one would be fine. I do want a remote and
good picture quality. It's been suggested I buy one through e-bay,
but I can't figure out what to buy. It was suggested that I buy a
Jerrold, but someone else said they have a funny non-EIA numbering
system that's off by 8 channels in some parts. Can anyone make a
suggestion for a good solid, but older, model number and manufacturer
name of a basic converter that I could buy off e-bay to drive my old,
but good picture, pre-cable TV?
TIA

What about using a broken VCR?

Use a cable ready VCR. A nonfunctioning one with a working tuner would
be perfect.

A VCR works great, but it won't fit in the space with the TV that the
old box used to fit into. (Well, I found one that would, but it was
way more than I want to spend.) I saw some cable boxes for under $25
on e-bay. My understanding is that most of these basic cable boxes
work about the same as a VCR to shift the signal to channel 2 or 3. I
hoped someone could just list a couple of manufacturers and models
that I might look for.

Thanks

Thanks. I'll take a look .... They look pretty good, but don't have
channel 2 output and they're no-name. I want to be able to use a
universal remote, and I need to be able to specify the
manufacturer/model to the remote (I'd like to check compatability
before I buy).

Anyone else who can suggest a mnfr/model of an old, but solid reliable
cable box? I could skip the channel 2 output if necessary (we have a
strong channel 3 broadcast interference here).

I have a Gemini that works well. You might want to look into their stuff,
as they're pretty well supported by aftermarket remotes.

Catalog is here; they currently offer two models:

Why not buy a used one from a charity used store. In Toronto, there are
all kinds of them for $5.

That seemed too obvious to suggest. You can also get them at rummage
and garage sales, and I've even found them in the garbage. I do see
an awful lot of Jerrold units.

About 8 to 10 years ago, I wanted the actual tuner part for something,
so I bought one for a few dollars at a sale, and then found a few
in the garbage. I then realized that there was no sense in grabbing
them when I found them, because they were common enough that I
could grab when if I needed anymore. Of course, that supply may
dry out, but I'm sure one will notice before they are all gone.
