I have an ASUS P2L97-DS motherboard with an Acer HX08 full tower chassis and
the 300 W supply that came with it. My problem is this:
I just purchased and installed a new hard drive for the machine and a
chassis fan. It seems the added load on the machine has caused a big
problem. I run Windows 95 and after some time the machine will ABRUPTLY
power off. In this state I *cannot* turn on the machine again with a reset
or power on key. I must unplug the power supply and wait and plug it in.
I suspect that the power supply is at fault; either the Vsb line (although
I do not know how this line affects things once the machine is already on)
or the PS-ON line (more likely). My questions:
1. Is it possible I am overloading a 300 W supply? What are the symptoms of
overloading a supply? I have the following devices:
. 1x P2-233, 32 MB SDRAM DIMM, 4GB Micropolis (7200 rpm) SCSI 3243,
1.6 GB Western Digital EIDE 31600, 1.5 GB Syquest Syjet EIDE, 3.5" FDD,
5.25" FDD, HP Colorado T1000 TBU, Chassis Fan (12 V @ .2 A), Intel CPU Fan,
Toshiba 6x CDROM XM5522 EIDE
2. How do I test the PS-ON line? Is it reasonable that the PS-ON is flakey
at higher loads?
Thanks for any help!
