My brother has a 1994 RCA CTC177AA3 chassis that originally started with the
typical tuner shield problem. I took the back off of the TV and he noticed
that the center to the thermistor was laying on the circuit board. I saved the
piece and took the board home with me to fix the tuner. I tried to solder the
legs back onto the thermistor but the thermistor cracked from the heat. The
thermistor has the part number 100-01A on it. I called around to the local RCA
repair centers and none would sell me a thermistor, they would let me bring the
board in for them to repair though. I checked with Parts Express and MCM
Electronics and neither have OEM thermistors for RCA so I bought a couple of
the Globar "generic" thermistors to try. I put one in, it appeared to work
fine for the first power on cycle. My brother turned the TV off after it had
been on maybe 2 minutes, let it sit for about 30 seconds, then turned it back
on and it blew the fuse. We replaced the fuse and as soon as I plugged the TV
in it blew the fuse. I removed the thermistor and replaced the fuse again (5A
125V fast blow). The TV powered up fine, but due to the fuse blowing now there
is a bullseye pattern on the screen.

Does anyone know where I can get a suitable replacement thermistor for the TV,
or maybe know the value of the original thermistor? The Globar is listed as
120 ohm cold. I suppose I could put a flameproof resistor in series with the
thermistor, but that might take a few fuses to get the value right so that the
thermistor gradually turns off and doesn't draw too much current.

Thank your for the reply. There was another guy who posted and e-mailed a
reply to me, but I screwed up and deleted the e-mail after having marked the
post read before I sent him a personal "thank you" so hopefully he will read
this.

As I originally stated, I tried a "generic" replacement thermistor that I
bought from MCM Electronics and it didn't work in this application. After
frustration, I put the original cracked thermistor back in after soldering it
back together and using some desoldering wick to strengthen it. From the very
first power on the screen was back to normal! I'm not sure how far to trust
it, so I am keeping your post filed for future use.
