The multi wire connection from the main unit to the cassette unit
is long enough for you to leave it connected and test the unit.
Only thing you have to add is a ground connection from the chassis
of the radio to the cassette unit. Great for cleaning the capstains!

Some units use a gear train to power the auto-reverse mechanism. Check to
make sure those are turning as required. Most cases though, the main belt
it the problem.

Some decks use a miniature magnetic reed switch adjacent to a magnetic ring
on the back of each reel. I haven't seen those fail much though.
Hope this helps.

Hello Donna, Your 16129961 radio should have a 16170367 cassette deck
in it. You can leave the deck hooked up to the radio and supply a
ground wire to the main deck plate so you can run it to see it work.
2 things to check: 1) look at the top side where the cassette sits
and you should see a brass lever up between the reels towards the tape
head. make sure this is not jammed. If it is, you will need to check
for debris blocking the plates and clear it.
2) there is a holding switch 1224872 that is
located on the bottom / outside of the reels that is actuated by a
white plastic lever. sometimes this switch will go bad, you can move
it slightly and see if the tape reels engage and run normal. if the
switch is bad you should replace it.
