Hi,

I'm in the UK. I've had this TV for several years. About a few months
ago, the lower half of the picture started to reduce in height. So we
were watching a picture where the top half was as normal but the lower
half squashed by 50% and the lower 25% just black. We found that
playing with the Scart input AV-1 tended to restore the picture back
to full size though the lower part would still sometimes flicker back
to 50% after a while. Today however entire picture is concentrated
into a 5mm wide horizontal line across the mid-height of the screen.
Sound is fine. Any ideas on the extent of repair/replacement - PCB,
tube, tuner, ...? Is repair justified - to give some idea cost around
50 GBP would be okay.

Many thanks,
Jas.

original fault was probably dry joints on an overheating frame drive IC.
If you now have a permanent frame collapse then the IC will probably have
failed totally and needs replaceing along perhaps with several comps around
it which will have been runnign hot also.
£50 would be a fair repair invoice for a job like that.
We're in Nelson Lancs, which is probably too far away to bring it.
You should find plenty of repairers to do it for you. Its not really a have
a go yourself type of job!
