Unless I hold the power button on the remote for 5 seconds. Then
everything works as usual unless I unplug from the wall and replug some
time later. It's an HR-J630u. I'm fixing it for a friend and I can give
it back as is but I'd like to know if there is anyone out there who's
repaired this particular fault. Thanks.

Not a fault..... the VCR is trying to "auto clock set"........ make sure
that signals are available to the tuner and turn the VCR on and select a
channel with a network station and in a few minutes or sometimes up to a
half hour or more, everything will be back to normal...... unless of course,
you unplug the VCR again.

This has to be a fault because when I first plug the machine into the wall it
just flashes "auto" and I can't get the power to turn on at all. The auto clock
set feature is a menu item in the setup that lets the unit set itself for time
according to data on a TV station, correct? In my case the VCR won't accept any
input at all. Will accept a tape but once it's in the machine is still
nonresponsive to front panel inputs. I found a way to get power on by holding
the power on button of the remote for more than five seconds. Seems to reset
and then power works. I just can't see how auto clock set ties in. Any other
suggestions? Thanks.

That is not a fault to be repaired but a built in feature of the unit to
auto set the clock on plug in.
Some units also will automatically do an autoprogram on initial plug in as
well.
