We were given an RCA 40" TV Model#PPR400P that has a light picture that is
also a little cloudy. Any suggestions as to what is wrong and how to repair
it? Thank you in advance.

Very probable the crts are quite weak and the set has multiple video and
power supply problems. The cost of the 3 pix tubes could exceed replacment
cost of complete unit. Also, quite a few of the componnts of this set are no
longer available as service parts form the manufacturer.

The CRT's are probably weak, but see how much dust is on the
mirror(s). We found a lot of dust on the lower mirror on a PJR601SR,
ca 1983, recently, and it made a big improvement in the picture.

Yes, as other replies state, the tubes could be weak, but most likely is
that the lenses and mirror are dirty, due to the fact that room air is
circulated through the light path in that unit.

We work on these sets and for about $200 it's done. We charge that for a repair
of a problem that keeps it from working and the cleaning/tune-up is included.
The results from this line of sets is not spectacular. They have a fairly sharp
picture, but by today's standard they are not bright enough. The customer is
happy though. . . . .. .

I believe you remove a PPR series screen by the two flathead screws at the top
of the back. The lenses are the X-ray protection, not the screen, so you can
renove it with impunity, and can then see the dirt easily when it's running..
Just don't stare into the lenses.

There are also things that we do to prevent a major fry-out later. If the
picture is (was) good enough for you, fix it or have it fixed. New stuff is
junk until they get the HDTV on the road completely.Youv'e got a CTC 132 in
there I think, or possibly a Hitachi, in either case what I said applies.

Keep it as long as long as you can
