I have a 1988 Sony Trinitron, model number kv-27tx20, with an On-Screen
Display stuck on. As we use a digital satellite receiver for the tuner
and hook it through the video inputs, the screen display permanently
says VIDEO. (Very annoying...).

I have checked web sites discussing the Sony service mode (which has an
option for turning off the OSP) but I think my TV is too old to have
such a mode. Any advice on how to turn off the display? Is there a
service mode that I am not aware of? Or...does anyone know where I
could get a copy of the service manual for this model?

If you have the Sony remote control that came with the tv, no problem getting
into the menu or pressing the display button to turn it off.
If you do not have the Sony remote control, you need to get one.

You are right about the 1988 tv not having a service mode.

On the remote for your TV set there should be a button marked
"Display". You should be able to turn it off with that.

I would believe your TV is much too old to have any service menus...

Note* If there is any defect with the sync pulses or structure with
the video signal from your source, this video display will stay on
indicating that there is a video fault with the signal.

I have a 20TS20 here which is a similar set. With improper video
going into the video input, the "video" icon stays on the screen at
all times. I tried it..

As for a service manual, they are available from Sony if they are
still in stock. This is an old set. These manuals can range from
about $20 to $60 plus handling; depending on the model, and age of
the set. Sometimes Sony will opt to photocopy an older manual if
there are none left, but they will still charge the regular price for
it. They will usualy do this for a customer if the set is so old
that they do not want to spend time to fix it...

the on screen display stuck on I assume is the channel number, to remove
this look for a button on the sony remote which shows a green square with a
star in the corner - this will remove the channel number in the corner

Thanks for the replies.

I should have been a bit more specific on my original post. I have the
original remote, but pressing "Display" will only remove the On Screen
Display for a short amount of time. (This time varies from seconds to
minutes, but the "VIDEO" always reappears). I believe the problem is
as described in Jerry G.'s message -- that there is something wrong
with the video signal coming from the source. But I'm not sure what
that could be.

I'm pretty sure, however, that the TV is the source of the problems.
Its tuner stopped functioning several years ago, so we have
alternatively used the tuners in the VCR, a cable box, and now a
digital satellite box and have run the signal through the RCA inputs on
the TV. The On Screen Display remains on using any of these signals
(it says "VIDEO"), so I don't think there is anything wrong with the
tuners. That is why I was hoping there was some way to permanently
disable the TV's On Screen Display (especially as it is no longer
needed).

Is there anything I can do to "clean up" the signals from the VCR or
satellite receiver to allow the TV to receive them?

Thanks again for all your help so far.

And the 10 posts suggesting that you turn to OSD off didn't help?

The tuner problem is probably very easy to fix. 99% of the time is was
only bad soldering in the IF box for that age of Sony. If the OSD stays
off when it's in tuner mode (even with just snow on the screen), the TV
is probably fine. Check your RCA cables, and try another source. It's
possible that there is a problem in the video input path that's causing
it to have trouble detecting the signal; this is probably not related to
the tuner problem. You'll need the service manual to disable the OSD,
but if you have that, you might as well fix the thing.

I ran into this once where I couldn't duplicate the symptom when the
customer brought set to my shop.I t acted up Immediatly when the
customer took it back home.I ended up taking a trip to the customers
house and determined that his expensive gold video cables were at
fault. After substituting them with a cheap set of cable the problem was
gone but there was no discernable difference in picture quality and I
have a pretty critical eye when it comes to stuff like that.
Its worth a try.Good luck.
