While trying to find data for these RCA transistors I discovered that I my
old RCA book is gone. Somebody call the cops! These are one of a kind
"TO-5" audio driver devices sitting on integral 0.75X1.25 inch rectangular
heatsink weighing about an once . Suitable substitutes may be ECG128,
ECG129 (not necessarily in that order) with a large press-on finned
heatsinks, but It may be difficult to realize the same low thermal
resistance.

Here's what I could still find:

40409 NPN, 40410 PNP
90Vcb Max
IC = 700ma MAX
Power dissipation = 3W free air MAX
4Veb MAX
ft=50Mhz
50 < hfe < 250
hfe bias = 150 ma (recommended operating current)
(Maximum Tj = 200 degC ho-hum)

Additionally, my Tower's manual suggests the 2N4001 for the 40409, and
2N4929 for the 40410. But don't forget about the heatsinks.

Hope this helps,

If I remember correctly, those are the TO-5 types welded into a
larger maze looking heat sink, which were used as drivers in
early 1970's amplfiers, like the H/K Citation 12, the Heathkit
AR-15 Receiver, etc.

40409 / 40410 ratings: 0.7A / 90V / 3 W. hfe 50-250.

Depending on the application, good subs would be:

2N5320 / 2N5322
2N5680 / 2N5682
2N3439 / 2N5415
2SA1837 / 2SC4793 ( 1A / 230V / 20W )

Thanx for help on the RCA 40 409/10 !
The ones I've got are more like TO-220 type of case, though.
Perhaps they were manufactured in different cases ?

Not that I know of, unless someone already sub'd something
