My VCR (Panasonic PV-V4660) is about 2 years old and a couple days ago
developed a problem. After recording a program and then playing it back,
the VCR flickers between the recorded program and a blue screen and, at the
same time, the VCR speed is switching back and forth. I would estimate the
time between each flicker (half-period) to be about 0.5 seconds and the
flicker is fairly regular. The first time this occured, the whole program
was ruined, but after about 10 tests tonight only the first 10 seconds or so
of the recorded program is ruined and then it plays back normally. Also,
this was tested with a brand new tape (which, following recording, looks to
be in fine condition, even in the region where playback is messed up).

I'm going to call Panasonic tomorrow but since this is no longer under
warranty I'm worried that the repair cost (perhaps even the dianosis cost)
may be more than the replacement cost, so if anyone has encountered
something like this before I'd be eager to hear about it.

Thanks,
Mark

Most likely a dirty audio/control head or worn pinch roller (or a
combination of both)
Does not sound too serious either way
Any competent engineer should be able to resolve the problem without too
much trouble

Don't get all excited here..... this is probably not a big deal..... more
than likely a clogged or dirty A/C head as the previous reply posting from
Phil suggested.
Since your VCR is 2 years old, it is time to get it professionally cleaned
anyway.
Be aware that you are actually making bad recordings and may have been doing
so for some time...... even if the tapes sometimes play on your VCR, they
may have possible tracking problems on another machine....
Get your VCR to a shop to get it cleaned right away. Be sure to mention the
symptoms so the shop tech can verify the problem.
