Hi
I am trying to repair a JVC MXS30 Component system (Model No. CA S30BK).
The CD player will not recognise the presence of a CD, I have checked the
operation and it attempts to focus, ie the lenze moves up and down searching
for focus. I held a piece of paper over the laser in a darkened room and saw
no output at all whilst it was doing this.
My question is has the laser failed or the laser drive cct. I have found
a suppler of replacement laser assemblies however I don't want to order one
only to find it is not the laser that has failed.
If you know any way to determine what part is actually at fault please
let me know. I have no cct diagrams for this system, so if those are
available that would be a big help too. I have access to most electronic eng
tools as I am a design engineer.

Thanks for any help you can offer,
Andy Dutton.

Hi there...

The laser is in the IR reagon. The human eye cannot see the beam even
if it is reflected. You must use a CD laser optical tester to know if
it is putting out the correct amount. You must refere to the service
manual and the test unit's specs information to know what the reading
should be for your model.

The problems of not being able to read the disk can be from the
spindle motor RPM's, the focus of the laser and position tracking,
the strength of the laser, and many other varyables...

A while ago, I had a CD player that would not play CD's at all. After
going through it, I found a crystal to be defective in the master
clocking circuit.

Yes, you can see the light coming from a CD player laser. You should be
able to see a dull red glow from the lens when it's trying to focus. If
you don't, the laser, or power supply to the laser is bad. There's no
need to use a sheet of paper, just look at the lens (there's no danger
as long as you're at least a few inches from the lens). This tells you
nothing about the laser power, or other parts of the pickup, but no
light is a definite problem.
