This is the case: Monitor(ASTVision 5L 15", early 1994 ) works like it
should on highres. modes like 800x600/85Hz, but with regural DOS and those
stantard modes the geometry with the picture is totally screwed. The
problem is that the text gets wider toward the center of the screen where
in borders it lowers to zero witdht:

|| | | | | ||

, something like that. Height proportions are ok.
The problem can't be fixed with the stantard tuners on the monitor, the
recall button gives totally outblown picture. Is this bad or is there
simply solution. I don't know any history of this monitor , bought it cheap
as it is and hoping it could be fixed to make yet usefull monitor. Colors
and sharpness of picture are ok, in any mode. If anyone's familiar with the
problem and has suggestion to fix it, i'd appreciate to hear it.

You're describing a horizontal linearity problem.

I'd guess that a different poly cap if being switched into circuit for
VGA text mode, either by a relay (do you hear a click when modes are
being changed) or a FET, which has become more common.

It should be relatively simple to see which cap(s) are active during
VGA text mode, and swap it/them. Just a guess, mind you.

One other note from my service notes:

Width control inop: D503 GI9424
