I own a Nakamichi OMS-2A single disc cd player. I bought this unit
new in summer of 87. About 4 years ago I noticed that the cd would
skip on the later tracks on many discs. The discs were not scratched.
I purchased a used Denon cd player to use and kept my Nak stored. I'm
a somewhat sentimental person and this was my first CD player. I
recently decided to haul it out again. It still works fine with the
exception of the above. I have tried cleaning the laser but that did
not help. My question pertains to the difficulty for a fix. I would
like to try to fix it myself. I have access to the laser diode from
various parts wholesalers. The problem is that I am not a technician.
I am somewhat technically minded as I have been employed in the A/V
industry for several years. I am capable of understanding the task,
but I have had no formal training. My father is capable of using
various test instruments as he was into general electronics as a hobby
several years ago.

Would this be as something we could undertake successfully? If so,
what would be the first thing to check. Should I try adjusting the
bias first. If so, how do I do this properly. I am assuming the
laser is getting weaker based on it's age and the fact that I used
this CD player a great deal. The laser used is a KSS-123A

Thanks for the advice.

Beyond the routine cleaning and lubrication there is not much else you can
do without a scope, alignment disc, and various other test gear........And
most important, experience and know how specific to CD players. You can not
do this overnite.........however you have to begin somewhere........and if
you are willing to shell out the bucks for a factory service manual that
details the alignment for the Nakamichi OMS-2A specifically, the alignment
disc (s) and a good wideband, triggered scope, I say GO FOR IT. Be
prepared to take it to a service shop when all else fails..........if you
do, don't get frustrated and create additional problems that will cost your
extra $.

Since you stated that it only starts skipping on the later tracks you might
want to consider cleaning and relubricating the tracks that the laser
assembly slides on. Sounds like it might be a stiction problem. Or if the
sled motor uses a belt for its drive then replace it.
Hope this helps
