Hello everyone,

I have a Sony Stereo Receiver in for service today. The model number
is STR-D965 and the problem is after pressing the power button the front
panel display lights up normally for about 5 seconds then goes out and
the word "protector" comes on and starts flashing. There is no audio. I
checked the audio outputs and most all diodes and transistors in the
power supply and audio stages. I know what the protector circuit is
supposed to do, but I don't know what is causing it and what I should
look for. I don't have a print or manual for this unit. Any help would
be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Glenn Watkins

The problem was two shorted surround channel output IC's. I didn't
disconnect these at first cause I thought they were some sort of voltage
regulators or something? Well, with both disconnected, the set works
perfectly (except with no surround of course). I got this tip from someone
in this newsgroup.

Thanks,
Glenn Watkins

Some of the STR Sonys had problems with grounds and ground screws.
Because I never remember which model, I always tighten then a little, just
to make sure...
