I have a Phillips VR6548 VCR that I am trying to fix.

I got it from my girlfriend. It didnt even accept tapes. I opened it up,
and there was a broken belt. I fixed this with a rubber band, and it now
accepts tapes, and works (mostly... read on)

It records and plays back fine, although sometimes while fast-searching
or rewinding (ie watching the picture while rewinding or
fast-forwarding), it seems that the tape does not stay in the right
track, and hence gets minor damage on the edges. It will not damage
tapes if you just play them back, and then use the fast rewind or
fast-forward on them (ie pressing stop first).

I also have to stick my finger in it to manually lift the idler assembly
a little higher when stopping the tape, and also while fast-forwarding
or rewinding (ie high speed ff and rew, after presssing stop). Needless
to say, it is getting annnoying having to hold my finger in it to rewind
and fast-forward, and also not being able to watch how far to
fast-forward...

I am new to vcr repair, so I looked at the repair faq at
http://fribble.cie.rpi.edu/~repairfaq/REPAIR/whole/F_vcrfaq.html
, with a pictur of the idler assembly at
http://fribble.cie.rpi.edu/~repairfaq/REPAIR/whole/idler.gif

The idler in my vcr has gears, if it makes a difference.

Can anyone help me out with some advice? I would really like to
(inexpensively) fix this vcr... Also, where can I get replacement belts
for this model (I would rather use a real vcr belt than a rubber band)?
If I need spare-parts (like an idler assembly, for instance), can anyone
tell me where I can get these as well?

Thanks in advance everybody, and apologies if this was sent to the wrong
newsgroup.

Another thing.. can anybody who replies to this please cc my email in
the reply? My newsserver seems to be a bit flaky...

You were wise to check the belts, but there are some other mechanical items you
may want to check out. first of all, I would actually check the idler tire
and/or idler assembly. Then I would check the reel heights of the take up and
supply reel. I would also compare the alignment and meshing of the idler
assembly to the actual reels, where the reels actually make contact with the
ilder assembly. You can use a test jig when checking these functions. This is
how I usually check a mechanism. In fact, I have rigged up my own jigs from old
VHS video cassette tape cases (with the tape no longer there).

Also, I would check the sensors using an infrared card to see if the read is
proper. Then finally, check the mode switch to see if it is dirty or out of
position (off of position #1 on resetting) or check the guidepost alignment on
the left and right guidepost on either side of the video head. Also, check for
worn out pinch roller or misaligned capstan post (the post has to be perfectly
centered).

All of these are physical and visual diagnoses that can be made in a relatively
short period of time. The only real time consuming tests are sensors for tape
in (reel sensors, etc...) and for mode switch check.

Hopefully, these suggestions will help you

I believe that the main problem with the vcr is that the idler is not
being lifted far enough up when fast rewinding. Could this be something
to do with the rubber band belt that I put in the vcr?

You need a proper belt, and also the pinch roller may be worn. I
would get the complete kit consisting of all the belts, idler tire,
and pinch roller. Then I would do a good cleaning of the tape path,
and take special care to make sure that the capston is also very
clean. Replace all these parts, and most of the time you will be back
in business again...

Well, If I where you, before going further with the VCR I would obtain
the proper replacement belt. After that, I would do a properly cleaning of
the heads, guideposts, etc.(See the FAQ) Rewind (or fast forward) requires
more effort from the mechanism than play. That's why a VCR unable to rewind
or fast forward a tape while it still can play it, is considered an early
sign of mech deterioration. The rubber band will not have the proper tension
and probably is skipping, thus causing an irregular movement of the tape in
fast forward or rewind. So, replace it with the proper belt, and after that
continue your troubleshooting.

Good luck!

I have recently been given a Realistic VCR with low hours, that had the same
problem; thrown belt in this case. It went on easily and the vcr plays (haven't
tried record) but won't rewind or FF. I will find a new belt tomorrow, use a
cleaning tape, and see what happens. I was sure I would find a solution here if
I just waited. Thanks.

Hi,

Totally agree with Jerry, but would add, use extra care when cleaning the
video heads, NEVER clean them in a up and down motion!

You should be able to get all the parts you need from

http://www.wescomponents.com

who are in Sydney but will mail all over Australia or there is Speedy
spares?? in Melbourne.

Believe it or not, the belts in a VCR are critical.
Although there could be some alignment problems,
I assure you that the rubber band is the problem.
