A problem with my apple studio display just started, now whenever I
turn it on the image stays on the screen for a split second, then
immediatly expands into nothingness leaving a blank screen behind.
The on button remains green and dosen't turn orange like when in
standby mode. Thanks in advance for your help, If you need anyore
info, post a message and I will reply.

You don't state if its a Studio Display 17 or 21? They are completely
different.

Your problem sounds similar to many of the ASD 17's. If a 17", did your
problem start with an arcing noise or click, the screen then dims or fades
out, then it reappears dim enlarged and out of focus before correcting
itself. This can happen once every few months to every few minutes and is a
common problem caused by the flyback transformer.

There was a recent post about PC power supplies where it was said that Compaq
want you to have their power supplies repaired
by Compaqs depot. Here is a work around for those who don't like being told who
gets to repair their stuff.

Compaq power supply : PS2021. Model number : PS-5151-4A. Part number :
213928-001.
Problem : 'Fuse' blown. 6.3 Amp M rating.
Description : The 'fuse' was a piece of fuse wire just soldered into the holes
on the pcb! Yikes is Compaq that tight on costs?
This is supposedly a brand name. The power supply had not been opened before
it landed on my bench.
Solution: Used Bob Parkers ESR meter. Found C24 and C25 low ESR. Changed C24
and C25. Both 330uF 200Volt. Fitted 5x20mm fuse
holder. Didn't have any 'M' rated fuses so popped a fast blow in. Repair
complete.

Additional : 1) M rated fuse is I think a 'medium' fuse halfway between a fast
and slow blow. The fast blow is holding though.
2) Bob, I think the amount of plugs I have given you now is deserving of
a years subscription to Silicon Chip or
Electronics Australia! :)

Hi again Stephen,
Thanks for saying nice things about the ESR meter, all the time!
Unfortunately, and I don't have any explanation for it, I probably
don't see most of your postings because my newsgroup server is
ignoring you and a lot of others. I only see your posts through Google
Groups.
If you want a subscription to Electronics Australia, that's easy
because it no longer exists! SC might be a bit more difficult. Please
give me time to think about it. Postage to South Africa is rather
expensive, you see....
