I was wondering if someone can give me some advice on
purchasing a good antenna for my GE 27" TV. I don't
have cable, and outdoor antenna's aren't permitted in my
neighborhood, so a clear picture is a problem in my house. I bought
a $29 high gain antenna made by Magnavox which says it
gives a 20db boost to your signal. They also had a
better antennal which boasts of a 45db boost for a bit more $.
When I put it on my Sony 19" which is located downstairs
in my house, the signal was no better than the default plain
rabbit ears that came with the TV. When I put it on my GE
TV, which is located upstairs, the picture on that TV is still
not as good as the Sony's with the plain antenna. Obviously
the tuning circuitry in the Sony is far superior. The question is,
should I fork out the bucks for the 45db higher gain antenna
for the GE (will it really help?) or just go with a plain antenna

Thanks for any help with this.

Why can't you fit an aerial in your loft??
45dB gain??? That sounds more like amplification. If you talking about an
amplified set top aerial, some makes are better than others.

It may be worth it if there is sufficient signal strength in your area
i.e you're not living in a signal null point. For example if the signal
is only 20dB above atmospherics adding 45dB of gain won't improve the
snow much. This is where a knowledgable installer can make a difference.
Ask your neighbors what their reception is like with their setup and try
to duplicate the one with the best performance.

Not sure what type of an antenna you bought. There are lots of
gimmicks and gadgets for sale which really are not good tv
antennas. Db numbers are confusing. A yagi antenna is good if it
covers the wanted frequencies and has enough elements. However,
they are fairly large for indoors. Small amplified antennas can't
help you because amplifying nothing produces nothing. Install a
small yagi antenna in your attic (if you have one). If no good,
then get cable. Sorry.
