I have a 36" Marantz television (made by NEC, I think) and it has
recently developed an odd problem. It appears that the image on the
screen has 'climbed' above the top of the picture tube and is then
being reflected back down. In other words, the top 10 percent of the
screen is superimposed by the image that should be at the very top.
The visual effect is lines of distortion that appear to be about 3
scan lines apart. There is no gap or any other problem at the bottom
of the screen but the problem is getting worse. It is difficult to
describe what this looks like but I was hoping that one of your great
minds had run into this before and could shed some light.

Any information would be appreciated.

This is known as "vertical fold-over". Caused by one or more bad capacitors
in the vertical section.

Small capacitors have gone bad in the vertical section . Test them with
an ESR meter and repace as needed

A failure in the vertical deflection circuit. You need to troubleshoot the
vertical circuit and pay special attention to the capacitors in the circuit
for being weak.

Most likely bad capacitors in vertical circuit; look for any that might be
leaking
