I have an older "Wear Ever" brand can opener that has served well for 20
years of minor use without much trouble. It's a handheld design and those
seem hard to come by in "today's can opener market" (!) so I would like to
sharpen the can cutting blade if that's possible. Or, if I don't think I can
handle the job safely with the tools around here, would an appliance repair
shop do this for a fee?
I really don't want a new can opener until this one is absolutely useless...

If it's a round blade then come up with a method to hold the blade
safely and centered in a dremel. Then with a steady hand pick the
correct blade angle and sharpen it on a fine knife sharpening stone.
Are you sure only the cutting blade is blunt? My broken can openers always
have worn out hinges and bearings. Almost impossible to repair.

Since the blade is hot-riveted on, this will be difficult to sharpen.
Also, it would have to be sharpened to still be very round, and have
the proper penitration angle. Sharpening any surface takes some off,
thus making the blade a little smaller. This may give some other
problems, especaily for the cutting debt.
Try the new Starfrit can opener. There is a model that leaves the
seam of the can, so there is no sharp edge. It is about $15 US, and
is excellent. We bought a few of them.
