Sony SLV-M20HF VCR, not much used and maybe about 1 year old. Tapes
often don't eject without a lot of fiddling or repeated tries. Through
the door one can see the tape not rise all the way - then it gets
reloaded. If you help it up at the critical moment, it will eject
sometimes but not always.

I removed the lid for inspection but didn't see anything obvious. Moving
parts appeared lubricated and smoothly functioning, and everything was
clean. But I didn't really see how the mechanism functioned.

Is this a common problem with an easy solution ?

George Pontis:
Usually what happens with this specific Sony VCR and similar series of Sony
models is that the front flipper door on the VCR is not opening all the way
and/or soon enough to let the tape cassette come out, therefore it goes back
in and is re-loaded. Usually this is due to a cracked lever or cam on the
left side of the tray and carriage assembly.
Frankly, if this were my VCR, I would completely remove the front flapper
door (easy solution) and run the VCR until it drops and then instead of
buying a brand-new replacement VCR, visit a local, friendly, small, owner
operated VCR repair shop and make a deal on a used, reconditioned 6 to 12
year old, high-end JVC, Sharp, or Sony VCR. Properly functioning, they
will out perform and outlast most any new VCR units you can buy today.

Daniel, sounds like the voice of great experience. Thank you for
responding. It happens that I do have another VCR, a JVC S5000 S-VHS
model. Mechanically I never had the slightest problem in 10 years of
light use. However, it never worked that well playing pre-recorded
tapes. It would exhibit tracking problems and go in and out of stereo. I
learned that it was a common problem with the head design.

I'll grab the Sony and head down to the workshop this evening...

.... and it may break again in 6 months. That particular design, in my
opinion, is pure crap.
