Old AKAI tape deck needs help

neil,

Check to see if you are getting enough torque on the take up reel. You =
may also want to see if the reels are aligned. If the tape is forward or =
back of the desired location, it can be dragged or skewed to one side of =
the capstan. You may also check out the capstan bearing if the CB and =
pinchroller are not in proper "camber" then you will get the digested =
mylar as a byproduct.

Any deck this old will have rubber parts deteriorating and slipping
instead of driving the adjacent wheel/pulley as designed. Look for
slipping rubber as you put it in play.
