Can I use the Mic socket found on some audio systems without a line-in
socket as a source for recording from other sources? Is there any
converters or other devices to do this?

Thanks in advance!

The mic input wants to have about 2 to 5 mv input maximum with an
impedance of less than 1 kohm.

You would need to build a circuit to reduce the line input level
from 250 to 1000 mv to the 2 to 5 mv level. Your signal to noise
ratio will not be ideal, but this can be done...

You should be able to find information about audio pad circuits in
most audio electronics reference books. You can try searching for
audio pad in most of the search engines.

Everything JerryG said and:

One of the connections is usually powering the microphone preamp. Yes it is
mono, if you want stereo, you need a line level input in stereo, maybe you
could use the CD audio input ?

Don't be fooled if there is a balance control on the mic input, even if it
works, it's a pan pot. Very very few mics on soundcards are stereo. The balance
(pan) control merely sends the signal to the two channels proportionally based
on your setting, but it comes from a monophonic source.

One trick I do go gain 1 or 2 new Aux inputs ( if u both have mike and phono
input) , is to bypass the preamps inside. If u have the circuit diagram, u
can see that the output of these preamps go exactly where the other Aux, CD,
Tape in, etc., are wired.

On some unit, they use a separate circuit board, just cut the wiring on the
rca or phone connectors, cut the output wiring, and just bypass with a
shielded wire or mini coax.
