Could somebody help me understand VCR mode switch
operation, especially how to clean the contacts. I have a
VCR but the mode switch seems to be totally encased in
plastic and I cannot seem to get at the contacts. Also any
details, easily understandable, of how to reset the mode
switch to its proper position - if it has been moved. Any
reasonably clear info is very welcome as I have looked
around and only got the bare operation of these mode
switches. Thank you, Regards

Try cleaning it without taking it apart with electronic
contact cleaner. Make sure it is safe on plastics. The mode
switch should have a timing mark (arrow, round hole) that
will line up with an adjacent gear. You may have to have the
unit unloaded, with tape in eject mode and tape guides in
the unloaded position. As we would say in the robotics /
electromechanical field, be certain everything is in the
"home" position.

If a switch is deep set and hard to get at, but I know the location of the mode
switch, then I use a small amount of silicone based tuner cleaner or similar
spray with a long plastic tube to carefully squirt a small ammount of cleaner
into, as not to mess up the rest of the mechanical or electrical components
very tightly in place nearby.

SOME CAN BE TAKEN APART OTHERS CAN'T, YOU NEED TO USE YOUR OWN
JUDGEMENT HERE. ALSO CLEANING DOESN'T ALWAYS WORK. IT MAY NEED TO BE
REPLACED. AS TO TIMING THERE ARE TIMING MARKS, A MANUAL IS BEST, AND IF
NOT TIMED RIGHT YOU WILL CAUSE MORE DAMAGE THAN JUST THE MODE SWITCH.
